Leadership Lesson: Control Thoughts & Emotions

March 9, 2016

In order to be a more effective leader, you must think, inspire, energize, connect, and act like a leader.  Here is a quick tip to help escalate your success as a leader through controlling thoughts and emotions:

Successful leaders have a constant positive outlook regardless of their situations.

These leaders develop an awareness of distressing thoughts and behaviors.  They overcome devastating emotional disturbance from the past, and live for today.

In order to be successful at controlling your thoughts and emotions, you have to realize that your outer being reflects your inner state.  This could mean taking a few moments to internalize reactions prior to sending an emotional response.

Try this:

If you are starting to feel overwhelmed by your thoughts and emotions, try to shift your attention and focus to something more positive.  Change your thoughts and be aware of your responses.  Take a few deep breaths before reacting to an emotional situation.  If you have someone to guide and talk you through an emotional time, it can help verbalize and calm the overwhelming feelings you may be experiencing.  Simply being aware of your emotional state and taking a moment to process can help calm your emotions.

“We are not a victim of our emotions or thoughts.  We can understand our triggers and use them as tools to help us respond more objectively.” – Elizabeth Thornton, 1940 – 2010
